Projects portfolio

By bringing together interdisciplinary teams of AI researchers, data scientists, policymakers and sustainability experts, my projects not only advanced the field of sustainable AI but also demonstrated the potential of collaborative innovation in addressing the world’s most urgent issues.

European Research projects

I have played a pivotal role in leading and managing a diverse portfolio of European projects across multiple framework programs, including FP6, FP7, Horizon and Horizon Europe, to name a few; Translectures (4.5 mill EUR), TRAMOOC (3 mill EUR), X5GON (3 mill EUR), and large scale networks of centers of excellence in AI, such as PASCAL2 (8 mill EUR), HumanE-AI-Net (12 mill EUR), ELISE (12 mill EUR), and RAIDO (8 mill EUR). My work has focused on driving exploitation, innovation and research management in artificial intelligence, fostering collaboration across pilots and case-studies, ensuring the successful execution of projects that address critical global challenges.

International Artificial Intelligence Micro-projects

I pioneered a dynamic funding model for micro-scale research projects, recognizing that large projects can be cumbersome and bureaucratically challenging. By providing targeted, quickly disbursed financial support, we accelerated impactful work, particularly in areas such as language datasets, data challenges for health and COVID-19, and AI education. This approach has proven effective within a larger, impact-driven program, enabling initiatives like the creation of 30 African language datasets, 40 mini-projects, and the establishment of a Fellowship for Low Resource African Languages, supported by key partners such as IDRC, GIZ, and UNESCO.

Challenges and Hackathons in Artificial Intelligence with European Commission and Amazon AWS

I have been instrumental in leading, organizing and overseeing a series of AI hackathons across Europe and Global South, focused on solutions for real-world challenges through artificial intelligence. Most notably I worked with the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative (ASDI) on AWS, and DigiEduHack at the European Commissions, Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture (DGEAC) with ~3500 online participants.

Artificial Intelligence tools repository for public sector, media and judiciary with UNESCO

This repository aims to be a comprehensive, one-stop resource for international stakeholders to identify, assess, and utilize AI tools that enhance efficiency, transparency, and service delivery. By curating and categorizing AI tools tailored to the unique needs of these sectors, the repository will support digital transformation efforts, especially in low- and middle-income countries, while promoting ethical standards and best practices in AI usage.
